The movers and shakers of the Scottish property industry sit among her judging panels and the country's top property related businesses continuously battle it out to get their hands on one of her coveted 'winners' titles, yet Kirsten Speirs, founder of KD Media the company that brings us the Scottish Property Awards and the Scottish Home Awards, manages to make running seamless property industry events look like child's play. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Kirsten is not only a highly regarded PR and business events professional, but also a busy mother of three.
I caught up with Kirsten following on from the Scottish Home Awards 2014, an awards contest for new build housing that attracts the highest calibre of entrants from across Scotland, to find out just how the multi-tasking mother manages to make it all look so easy.
- You've been producing high end business events for over 11 years, what sort of property events do you produce at KD Media. KD Media is a PR consultancy but we are probably better known now for our awards work as they are so high profile. The Scottish Home Awards is in its 7th year recognising the best new build housing and the Scottish Property Awards, which we launched last year, presents awards for the best new commercial and public property. We are also about to the launch the 12th year of the Scottish Legal Awards.
- You resurrected the Scottish Property Awards in 2013/14, what inspired you to do this? The commercial property market was still in a slump it but it felt like the right time to do something. The motivation really came from our charity partner, It's Good 2 Give. They needed money and expertise to build a residential retreat for families with children affected by cancer. By showcasing the charity at the Property Awards I knew we could help them.
- What is your biggest challenge when launching another awards contest? The market is flooded by business awards so I never start anything unless I think it's going to be very successful.
- What is the main difference between the Scottish Home Awards and the Scottish Property Awards? The events are actually quite similar but the companies who enter are different. Most companies use our awards as a team building exercise or to boost their own PR and business development. We have a 12 month publicity programme for all our awards programmes so that our finalists and winners can gain great exposure. I really believe that winning one of our awards helps companies make more money and keep their best people.

- How do you select and recruit your judging panels? It's a simple invitation really or recommendation from another judge. We're very rarely turned down.
- What/who couldn't you live without when it comes to organising award events and why? A good supply of home-made cake keeps us all going.
- What are you most proud of in relation to the portfolio of business awards you have created? I love watching the winners' reactions; it means so much to them. Seeing very worthwhile winners receive the recognition they deserve is so gratifying. We've presented numerous lifetime achievement awards to some amazing individuals; they bring their families and it's almost always emotional. It's always my favourite part of the night. Plus we have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity and that makes me feel great.
- What type of property do you live in and why? We extended our house a couple of years ago and now have a five bed family home. We live in a very sociable street full of children who spend their afternoons jumping the fences in between gardens. We walk to school and my husband Tom and I both walk to work. I can't imagine ever moving. It's perfect.
- How do you spend your time when you're not in the office? Usually in some degree of chaos chasing my three boys around the house, having Nerf fights or being a taxi driver to the next sports event. We're a typical busy family but fortunately my husband and I make time at the weekend to relax having dinner in town with friends.
- If Kirsten Speirs were to win an award what do you think it would be for and why? Probably for the World's Best List Writer, I couldn't live without them.
